upgrading from vista RC2 to vista release
Actually, Vista Beta 2 5384 is the milestone for Beta 2, but any build after that and until RC1 is still Beta 2. 5456 is Beta 2. Next month's interim drop will also be Beta 2. Calling 5384 "Beta 2" is common parlance, but inaccurate if interpreted to mean it is the "true" Beta 2. This is simply not the case.

I've also read the excellent blog on the subject and it's clear to me that VISTA will not in any way impede my legitimate enjoyment of copyrighted content. I plan to abide by the copyright laws and subject myself to HDCP eventually, when it comes fully into play, but I think I'll use the present interim period

FWIW, I'd recommend waiting on buying a new PC right now (or buying something as cheap and interim as possible). Planning on buying Vista?
I see WinXP x64 as an interim solution to test the waters prior to Vista, and there is no sense dealing with driver issues and the like for an interim solution. May as well hold off on the OS upgrade until you do the hardware upgrade. Of course, if you do have RAM issues, then maybe going 64-bit now is worthwhile

Microsoft had added an additional interim release, codenamed "Fiji". In Vista, the boot information is stored in a new "Boot Configuartion Data" file and not in the boot.ini file. I do not consider the Vista bcdedit.exe boot modification application user friendly. The security pieces of Vista have been subject to change even over the past 6 months or so and building a client which depends on that component means one needs That being said, I agree, I'd love to see even a controlled distribution option beta sooner than March. For the interim, I'll use Native File Access.

Perhaps it's only being discussed in the private beta ngs. It's a real shame as, this problem aside, this beta is rather usable. Unfortunately, because of this I will probably have to ditch it and wait for the next release :-( Perhaps some nice Microsoftie will take pity on us and release an interim fix... DIF.
